Threading Narratives

A solo exhibition by Mae Aguinaldo-Mapa

In Mae Aguinaldo-Mapa’s practice one can find traces of drawing and sewing. She shares that the creatures and forms present in her work first come to life on paper as doodles. For Aguinaldo- Mapa, these are manifestations of the deeply personal. They are the embodiment of her thinking and feeling.

Aguinaldo-Mapa then uses the doodles to model sewn creatures and forms. At a later stage, the creatures and forms will interact with different physical environments. These interactions are then documented in photographs by the artist.

In the exhibition Threading Narratives the artist makes use of the gathered photographs to invite the viewer to assign meaning to the creatures and the overall scene they are presented in. For Aguinaldo-Mapa, in the search for meaning and connections the viewer becomes an active participant and storyteller. The created narrative is a reflection of the viewer’s state of mind. As were the early stage doodles reflections of the artist’s.

Mae Aguinaldo-Mapa is an artist based in Manila, Philippines. Her work traverses fashion, crafts, education, and participatory art projects. She has produced various works and cross-disciplinary projects in Southeast Asia. This April, Aguinaldo-Mapa brings her current long-term project “Taghiyawat na naging Nunal/ A Pimple that become a Mole” to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Bangkok, Thailand.

ผลงานของ มาเอ อากินัลโด มาปา นั้นมักมีร่องรอยของการวาดเส้นและการเย็บปักถักร้อยอยู่ มาเอ อากินัลโด มาปา เล่าว่าสรรพสัตว์และรูปทรงต่าง ๆ ที่ปรากฏในงานของเธอนั้นเริ่มมาจากการเขียนเส้นขยุกขยิกบนกระดาษก่อน สำหรับเธอแล้ว ลวดลายที่ปรากฏขึ้นเหล่านี้มาจากเบื้องลึกของจิตวิญญาณของเธอ เพราะมันคือห้วงความคิดและอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของเธอที่แปลงออกมาเป็นรูปธรรม

จากนั้น มาเอ อากินัลโด มาปา ก็ใช้เส้นขยุกขยิกเหล่านี้นำมาเย็บปักขึ้นรูปเป็นสรรพสัตว์และรูปทรงต่าง ๆ ในภายหลัง สิงสาราสัตว์และรูปลักษณ์เหล่านี้จะมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับสิ่งแวดล้อมรอบตัว และเธอก็จะบันทึกอากัปกิริยาเหล่านี้ไว้บนภาพถ่าย

นิทรรศการ “ถักทอเรื่องราว” นี้ ศิลปินได้นำภาพถ่ายต่าง ๆ มานำเสนอ เพื่อให้ผู้ชมได้ร่วมกันให้ความหมายใหม่กับสรรพสัตว์และทัศนียภาพที่ปรากฏอยู่ สำหรับ มาเอ อากินัลโด มาปา แล้วนั้น เธอหวังให้ผู้ชม สามารถกลายเป็นผู้เล่าเรื่องราวได้เองในขณะที่รับชมและพยายามคิดหาความหมายและความเชื่อมโยงในปฏิสัมพันธ์นี้ เรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้นจะเป็นภาพสะท้อนของสภาพจิตใจของผู้รับชม ดังเช่นเวลาที่เส้นขยุกขยิกเป็นภาพสะท้อนของห้วงอารมณ์ของศิลปินนั่นเอง

งานเปิดตัวนิทรรศการคือวันที่ 20 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2562 เวลาสิบแปดนาฬิกา ที่สตูดิโอ Buró57 เลขที่ 402/69 ซอยเจริญกรุง 57 กรุงเทพฯ และงานนิทรรศการจะเปิดให้เข้าชมได้ตั้งแต่วันดังกล่าวจนถึงวันที่ 25 พฤษภาคม ท่านสามารถแจ้งความประสงค์ก่อนเข้าชม และสามารถรับข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมได้ที่อีเมล hello.buro57@gmail.com และกรุณาติดตามเราได้จาก

มาเอ อากินัลโด มาปา เป็นศิลปินที่มีถิ่นพำนักอยู่ที่กรุงมะนิลา ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ ผลงานของเธอมีทั้งแฟชั่น งานประดิษฐ์ฝีมือ และงานศิลปะแบบมีส่วนร่วมกับคนดู เธอรังสรรค์ผลงานมากมาย รวมไปถึงผลงานศิลปะที่นำแขนงต่าง ๆ มาประกอบกัน ในเดือนเมษายนนี้ มาเอ อากินัลโด มาปา ได้นำโครงการศิลปะระยะยาวของเธอ ชื่อ “สิวที่กลายเป็นไฝ” (A Pimple that Becomes a Mole) มาจัดแสดงที่กรุงกัวลาลัมเปอร์ ประเทศมาเลเซีย และที่กรุงเทพฯ
