2-FACE

Indian performance artist Bhuvanesh Kumar created the performative piece GOLDEN SEEDS during the Illicit Bodies event at the National School of Drama in Bangalore in late November.  The piece completes our collaboration, dubbed 2-FACE.  Bhuvi and I will continue to work together to further develop 2-FACE.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT: 

2-FACE is a collaboration between Filipino artist Mae Aguinaldo and Indian artist Bhuvanesh Kumar. The collaboration tackles uncontrolled urbanization that is changing the face of the city. It is a reflective pause over the meaning and the costs of such development. Gold is a both symbol for what is precious and what is sacred. Golden Rule, Aguinaldo’s t-shirt art piece, portrays a facade of the dream city in gold. Golden Seeds, Kumar’s performance, is a call for reflection on this dream. 

In Golden Seeds, Kumar is a bearer of the changed city, pouring, spreading, giving, and placing seeds of thought in the hands of people also bearing the changed city. In his second performance more than a year after, Kumar modifies his performance. This time, he sits in contemplation for an hour in front of a plant in a road in Kolkata as residents pass him by.
